Don’t Guess – Get It Right or Cop the Consequences
So, you’ve hooked up your trailer and you’re ready to roll. But hang on a sec — how should you load your trailer? Mate, this isn’t something to wing. Load it wrong and you could be looking at swaying, blown tyres, or even losing your load mid-drive. Let’s get you sorted.
Why Trailer Loading Matters
When you load your trailer properly, you stay safe, you drive smoothly, and you keep the coppers off your back. If you chuck everything in without thinking, you can unbalance your trailer and make towing a nightmare. Worst case? You’re a hazard to everyone on the road.
How Should You Load Your Trailer? – The Basics
1. Keep It Heavy at the Front:
Around 60% of the total load weight should sit in the front half of your trailer, ahead of the axle. Too much weight at the back and you’ll get that horrible fishtailing effect — not fun when you're bombing down the motorway.
2. Centre the Load Side to Side:
You want your load to sit square and balanced. If one side’s heavier, you’ll put uneven pressure on your tyres and the trailer will pull to one side. Keep it central, mate.
Loose gear is a recipe for disaster. Straps, ropes, netting — whatever you’ve got, use it. And make sure you’re tying down to proper anchor points, not just wrapping a bungee around your bike handles and hoping for the best.
4. Keep the Weight Low:
Stacking it high? Nah, don’t do that. The lower the weight sits, the more stable your trailer will be. Think solid, not skyscraper.
5. Check Your Nose Weight:
The downward force on your tow ball (your nose weight) needs to be just right — not too light, not too heavy. Your vehicle manual will give you the safe range, so don’t skip this step.

Low and tight is the goal
Check your nose weight
What Happens If You Load a Trailer Incorrectly?
If you get it wrong, you’re asking for trouble. You could face:
Poor braking
Tyre blowouts
Damaged suspension
Fines or points for unsafe loads
So, how should you load your trailer? Like a pro. Load smart, strap tight, and double-check before you drive.
