Stay Safe When Using a Plant Trailer

Plant trailers are built to carry heavy-duty equipment, but if you’re not using them correctly, things can go south quickly. Whether you’re hauling a mini digger, a scissor lift, or another bit of kit, these safety tips will keep you on track and out of trouble.

Know Your Load

Before you even start loading, make sure you know what you're towing. What’s the weight of your machine? Does your trailer have the capacity? Is your towing vehicle up to the task? Always check the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and stay within limits.

Use Ramps Safely

Most plant trailers come with integrated or attachable ramps. Use them on level ground and make sure they’re locked in place before loading. Use low gear and take it slow—speeding up the ramp is a recipe for tipping or slipping.

Balance and Secure the Load

Distribute the load so most of the weight sits just forward of the trailer axle. This prevents trailer sway and helps with braking stability. Use heavy-duty ratchet straps or chains to secure machinery, and double-check all tie-down points.

Pre-Tow Checklist

Before you set off, do a full walk-around check. Look at your tyres, lights, brakes, coupling, safety chains, and straps. Make sure nothing is loose, damaged, or hanging where it shouldn’t be.

Drive Steady

Plant trailers are often wider, heavier, and taller than your average car trailer. Take corners wider, allow extra braking distance, and keep your speed down, especially on rural roads or sites with loose ground.
