Many small payments or fewer big ones?

The same £5,000 a month taken as small or large payments. Percentage-only providers cost the same either way; a fixed fee per payment (Stripe's 10p) costs far more on small payments.

Premium, reward and overseas cards: no extra charge

Customers buying something expensive often pay on a reward credit card to collect points, and visitors pay on overseas cards. Many providers charge you more for those. Flatpay charges the same rate for every card type.

  • Flatpay: "You pay the same low rate for every card type." Its UK pages do not list which card networks it accepts, so for American Express, request info about your specific circumstances. source
  • Overseas customers with eligible Visa and Mastercard cards can choose to pay in their own currency. Flatpay charges no extra fee for this and shares 1% of the conversion mark-up with the business as a discount on its fees. source

  • Zettle: the same 1.75% for major cards and wallets, "even American Express". source

How we compared

  • Prices are read from each provider's own UK pricing page and dated. We re-check them and change the date when they move.
  • Only published in-person (card present) rates are used. Online, invoice and custom rates are not.
  • Year-one cost is card takings times the rate, plus any fixed fee per payment, plus the cheapest terminal. Optional monthly plans and VAT on hardware are left out.
  • Dojo's published rate applies under £100,000 a year, so higher levels show a dash. Flatpay drops to 0.99% above £200,000 a year and charges £39 in months under its £1,100 minimum.
  • GetBrent works with Flatpay and may receive a fee if you sign up through our quote form. That does not change any price shown.

Questions

Which card machine has the lowest fees in the UK?

On published rates for businesses taking under £100,000 a year, Dojo's 1.2% is the lowest headline rate, but its terminal costs from £149 and it has a 12-month contract. Flatpay charges 1.49% on every card type with no monthly fee and no upfront terminal cost. Which is cheapest for you depends on your takings: use the calculator.

How much does a card machine cost a small business a year?

At £5,000 a month in card takings and an average payment of £25, year-one cost on published prices is £869 with Dojo, £894 with Flatpay, £1,039 with SumUp, £1,069 with Square and £1,079 with Zettle, including the cheapest terminal. The table below shows five takings levels.

Is a percentage fee or a fixed fee per payment cheaper?

For small payments a percentage-only fee is usually cheaper: Stripe's 10p per payment adds 1% on a £10 sale. Flatpay, SumUp, Square, Zettle, Dojo and Worldpay publish percentage-only in-person rates.

How do you work out these figures?

Card takings times the published in-person rate, plus any fixed fee per payment at the stated average payment, plus the cheapest terminal each provider sells. Optional monthly plans, VAT on hardware and custom quotes are left out. Flatpay adds £39 a month when takings are under its £1,100 minimum.

Do UK customers still pay with cash?

Cash was 8% of all UK payments in 2025, down from 17% in 2020. 39% of all UK payments were contactless in 2025. (UK Finance.)
