Can I store a car in a storage unit without road tax?

By Brent·

Short answer

Yes, a car can be kept in a storage unit without paying vehicle tax, but only if it stays off the public road and the owner has declared it off the road with a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) through the DVLA. If the car is kept off the road, the owner must either tax it or have a SORN in force.

Yes, you can keep a car in a storage unit without paying vehicle tax, but only if the car is kept off the public road and you have declared it off the road. The DVLA runs that declaration, known as a SORN, and this guide explains how it works, where the risks lie and what to check before you book. For local options, see self storage in London.

What the DVLA requires

The DVLA's position is that you must tax your vehicle if you're using it or keeping it on a public road . That means the rule is not only about driving. If a car is kept off the road, the owner has two options: either tax it, or register it as off the road by making a 'Statutory Off Road Notification' (SORN) .

Chesterfield Borough Council's guidance on untaxed vehicles says the same. Chesterfield Borough Council's guidance says that a vehicle kept off-road, for example on a private drive or land, must either be taxed or have a SORN in force. The location of a storage unit therefore matters, and you should confirm the arrangement before the car goes in.

Why an untaxed car in storage is a risk

Leaving a car untaxed and undeclared is not a safe shortcut. The DVLA warns that if you do not tax your vehicle, you could find your vehicle clamped or impounded . A SORN does not give a car unlimited freedom either. Chesterfield Borough Council states that it may also remove a vehicle that is on the public highway or in a publicly accessible place, where a SORN is in place .

If a car is seized, recovering it takes paperwork and money. The council expects proof of vehicle ownership and ID, and you will also need to pay a release fee , and it explains the fee when you arrange collection. Keep your documents to hand so that collection is not delayed.

Declaring SORN and taxing the car again

If a car is registered but untaxed, the DVLA's guidance is that you must register it as off the road on GOV.UK at gov.uk/make-a-sorn. When you want the car back on the road, you can tax it quickly and securely online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on GOV.UK . Taxing also requires that your vehicle must be insured and have a valid MOT in place if it needs one .

You can check the position yourself. The DVLA advises you to use GOV.UK to check if your vehicle is taxed , and notes that its check service is updated within 48 hours excluding weekends and bank holidays . Allow for that delay if you are checking a recent declaration.

Checklist before you book a storage unit

  1. Confirm that the storage operator accepts vehicles in the unit you are considering.
  2. Check whether the car will need to travel on a public road at any point. If it does, it must be taxed before that journey.
  3. Make the SORN on GOV.UK, or tax the car, before it goes into storage, and keep the confirmation.
  4. Check the tax status on GOV.UK after the declaration has been made.
  5. Keep your V5C logbook, proof of ownership and ID together in case the car is ever collected from a council yard.
  6. Ask the storage firm and your insurer what cover applies while the car is in the unit.

Once you have confirmed the rules, you can compare providers. Ask each one about vehicle rules, access and insurance before you commit.
