How Early Can You Get an MOT Without Losing Days?

By Brent·

Short answer

The earliest you can take an MOT and keep your renewal date is one month minus a day before the current certificate expires. For example, if the MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest date to test and keep that renewal date is 16 April. Testing earlier than that moves the renewal date, because the new certificate runs from the test date.

The earliest you can take an MOT and keep your renewal date is one month minus a day before the current certificate expires. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. Knowing how that window is measured helps you avoid either paying for a test too early or leaving it too late.

How the one-month window is measured

The GOV.UK rule is that you can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out. If your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is 16 April. The new certificate then carries on from the original expiry, so no days are lost.

What happens if you test before the window opens

Testing earlier than the window is not forbidden, but it has a cost in days. You can get an MOT earlier, but the renewal date for the following year will change to one year (minus a day) from the date the vehicle last passed its MOT.

The GOV.UK guidance gives a clear illustration. A certificate due to run out on 15 May, tested on 14 April, would set the next deadline back to 13 April of the following year.

Checklist before you book

Work through these steps before you choose a date:

  1. Look up the current expiry date using the GOV.UK MOT history service, which shows when your vehicle's certificate runs out.
  2. Work out your earliest test date using the GOV.UK rule that you can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out.
  3. Book a slot on or after that date and before the certificate expires, so the test falls inside the window.
  4. Note that the window does not apply where the last MOT was in Northern Ireland and the next test is in Great Britain, because the renewal date is then based on the GB test.
  5. Call the test centre to confirm it can test your vehicle class and has a slot within the window.

Choosing where to have the test

Once you know your dates, compare the workshops that can take your booking.

When you contact a garage, ask about availability inside your window, whether it handles your vehicle type, and whether you can drop the vehicle off on the day you choose. Keeping the booking inside the window protects your renewal date and gives you time to act on any repairs before the certificate runs out.
