What age do you need to hire a van in the UK?

By Brent·

Short answer

Most UK van hire companies set a minimum age of 23, though some accept drivers from 21 for smaller vans. Drivers under 25 often pay a young driver surcharge and face stricter licence checks. There is no universal legal minimum hire age, but companies set their own limits driven by insurance requirements. Always confirm the exact policy with the hire firm directly.

Most UK van hire companies will not rent to drivers under the age of 23, and some set the bar at 25 - so checking the age policy before you book is an essential first step.

Is there a legal minimum age to hire a van?

There is no single law in the UK that fixes a minimum age for hiring a van. The DVSA sets the rules for driving licences - a standard category B licence allows you to drive any vehicle up to 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes) gross vehicle weight, and you can hold one from the age of 17. However, the age at which a hire company will actually hand over the keys is a commercial decision driven almost entirely by insurance, not by statute.

In practice, the industry has settled on 23 as the most common minimum for self-drive van hire. A small number of companies accept drivers aged 21 for lighter or smaller vehicles, and a handful require drivers to be 25 or older for the full range of their fleet. Confirm the specific policy with the company you plan to use, because it varies by firm and sometimes by depot or vehicle category.

What happens if you are under 25?

Even where a company does rent to drivers aged 23 or 24, those drivers are typically classed as "young drivers" and face additional conditions. These commonly include a young driver surcharge added to the hire rate, stricter licence requirements, and restrictions on which vehicles are available.

Younger drivers are generally limited to smaller van categories. Larger vehicles - such as Luton vans with a tail-lift - are frequently restricted to drivers aged 25 or over, because they carry higher risk and greater replacement cost. The surcharge exists because insurers rate under-25s as a higher-risk group statistically, and companies pass that additional premium on to the hirer. Confirm the surcharge amount directly with the hire firm, as it varies between companies.

Licence and experience requirements

Age alone is not the only criterion. Most companies require that you have held a full UK driving licence for a minimum period - usually at least one year, and often two years. Points and convictions also matter. Typical conditions for younger drivers or general hirers include:

The DVSA issues the driving licence and sets what each licence category covers, but the hire company's insurer sets the additional requirements above that baseline. The Highway Code applies to all drivers once on the road, regardless of whether the vehicle is owned or hired.

Is there a maximum age for van hire?

Most companies do apply an upper age limit, though it is not set by law. The most common ceiling is 69 or 75, depending on the company. Drivers approaching or above that threshold are sometimes required to provide additional medical clearance or may be limited to smaller vehicle categories. As with the minimum age, the policy differs between operators, so check before booking.

What size van can a standard licence cover?

A standard category B licence - the one most UK drivers hold - permits you to drive any van or vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. This covers the full range of hire vans you are likely to need for a house move or a one-off delivery job, from a small transit-style panel van through to a Luton box van. You do not need any additional category on your licence for these vehicles.

If you need a larger vehicle above 3.5 tonnes - for example a curtain-sider or a specialist plant-carrying vehicle - a category C1 or C licence is required. For those requirements, look at specialist vehicle hire options where firms can advise on the correct vehicle class and the licence needed to drive it.

Practical checklist before you book

Run through these points before contacting a hire company:

  1. Check your driving licence category - make sure it covers the size of van you need.
  2. Check how long you have held your licence - most firms require at least one to two years.
  3. Count your penalty points - six is a common maximum; zero is often required for under-25s.
  4. Note your age - if you are under 25, ask specifically which vehicles are available and whether a surcharge applies.
  5. Gather your documents - licence, photo ID and proof of address before you arrive.
  6. Ask about insurance excess - the level of excess on a hired vehicle can be significant; consider whether the company offers an excess reduction product.
  7. Confirm fuel policy - most hire companies operate a full-to-full policy, but confirm this in advance.

If you need something more unusual than a standard panel van - for example a refrigerated vehicle, a minibus or a long-wheelbase specialist vehicle - companies offering those types of hire can be found through specialist vehicle hire listings. Local options are also available if you search by area, including specialist vehicle hire in London and specialist vehicle hire in Southampton.
